What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a popular system of natural medicine that has been used for over 200 years.  It is recognized by the World Health Organization as the second largest therapeutic system used in the world. It has been integrated into numerous national health systems in countries such as Germany, UK, India, Pakistan, Mexico and Sri Lanka.  The remedies, (medicine), used are completely natural and are made from plants, animals, minerals, and metals.

Homeopathy takes the whole person into account when prescribing remedies.  These carefully chosen remedies work by stimulating your body’s natural ability to heal itself.

Homeopathy is founded on two main principles, the first being “like cures like” which means that if a substance is capable of producing certain symptoms in a healthy individual, it can be used to treat those same symptoms in a person that is ill.

For example, if you cut a red onion your eyes sting and water and your nose may run.  Red onion in Homeopathic form is called Allium Cepa and one of its uses is to treat allergies that cause symptoms of running, stinging eyes and runny nose.

The second main principle is that only “the minimum dose” should ever be used in order to avoid side effects.  This principle is based on the understanding that remedies stimulate your body to heal itself and that we only need to give just enough to produce a response.  This ensures that treatment will be as gentle as it is effective.

History of Homeopathy

Homeopathy was founded in Germany in the late 1700’s by Samuel Hahnemann who was a medical doctor and chemist that had become dissatisfied with the state of medical practice in his time.

While working on a project, Hahnemann became intrigued with a South American tree bark that was being used to treat malarial fevers.  Hahnemann ingested the bark himself and found that it produced symptoms similar to those that malaria produces.  The idea of “similar suffering” was born and he began compiling his findings and expanding his research.

The name Homeopathy, coined by its founder, is derived from the Greek words for similar suffering.

Who can use Homeopathy?

Homeopathy can be used in all stages of life and for a vast array of conditions.  It is safe during pregnancy, for infants and children, for teens and adults, for the elderly and even for people with serious chronic diseases.  Homeopathy works with your specific immune system to restore it back to balance.  It treats the entire person (mind, body and spirit) not just specific symptoms.

What can I expect from my first appointment?

The initial visit is approximately 1 hour long and includes extensive gathering of a patient's history.

Understanding how you function as a whole being is paramount to choosing the correct remedy as Homeopathy does not use a “one size fits all” approach.

After your initial appointment I will spend a day or two analysing your case to ensure the proper remedy selection.

What is the difference between a Homeopath and a Naturopath?

Naturopathy uses a range of natural healing options with Homeopathy being one of the options.  A Naturopath receives basic training in Homeopathy with their schooling where a Homeopath specializes in homeopathic medicine which is a complete medical system in itself.

A simple and easy comparison would be to consider your family MD who is diverse in their approach vs a specialist which is focused.

Both Naturopathy and Homeopathy are regulated health professions in the province of Ontario.

What training and credentials does a Homeopath have?

A Homeopath has completed 3-4 years training at an accredited Homeopathic College.  They study Anatomy and Physiology, Disease and Pathology, Nutrition, Advanced Homeopathic studies and have extensive clinical experience.

Homeopaths in Ontario are also required to be registered with the regulating body, The College of Homeopaths of Ontario.
