Calendula for Radiation Burns

Calendula is highly effective for the prevention of acute dermatitis of grade 2 or higher and should be proposed for patients undergoing postoperative irradiation for breast cancer.

Between July 1999 and June 2001, 254 were undergoing radiation treatment for breast cancer. 128 patients were given trolamine and 126 patients were given calendula to use after each radiation session.

The occurrence of acute dermatitis of grade 2 or higher was significantly lower with the use of calendula (41% vs. 63%).
